Dear Once Upon a Fic Writer!

Some of this is taken directly from previous letters because my likes/wants really don't change all that much! Apologies for any repetition.

Aside from my DNWs (which aren't exactly extensive), feel free to go ahead and pick and choose through anything/everything below. I'm pretty easy to please so if you want to read the DNWs, skip the rest and write the fic of your heart in whatever fandom we matched on, that's absolutely fine by me.

Note: I'm completely happy with any rating ranging from the mildest G right up to the most explicit of explicit. Also, length of prompts below doesn't indicate that I want one fandom more than another - I just have more words for some and more incoherent squee for others. ;)

100% DNWs:
  • children/pregnancy (not even vague mentions of pregnancy at all, please, including mpreg and oviposition, and no children as main characters - I'm happy to read a bit about the characters themselves as kids in the past, but I'd prefer everyone involved be adults at the time the fic takes place)
  • For this exchange: modern AUs. AUs in any other time period totally fine!
  • D/s lifestyle (casual D/s without minute negotiation, or totally unnegotiated iffiness, are both A-OK!)
  • humiliation (as a kink or otherwise) - sometimes I like it, sometimes it kills me; I can't explain why, so best to avoid!
  • scat/watersports
  • A/B/O
  • ageplay/infantilisation
  • any mention of spiders/tarantulas or similar - other creepy-crawlies are fine

Things I'm not exactly fond of:
  • character death, if followed only by someone else's unending woeful angst (character death in general is totally fine, however!)
  • threesomes/moresomes/poly, unless requested
  • pure fluff/curtainfic - happy is wonderful, holding hands while skipping through meadows not so much!

Basically, as long as it's not in my DNWs, absolutely go for it - I mean that 100%. Zombie apocalypse? Really kinky porn? Gore? Vore? Random crack? Badfic on purpose? Wacky AUs? All fine! But, if you want ideas about what I like:

General likes:
  • time loops
  • Pacific Rim fusions
  • snarky, sarcastic or tongue-in-cheek humour
  • banter
  • characters getting older; ageing
  • characters knowing each other really well
  • futurefic/post-canon - as far in the future as you like
  • competence, whether physical or intellectual (or both)
  • action scenes; battles; fights (small- and large-scale; fistfights and with weapons)
  • characters being forced to fight and/or kill (Hunger Games, Mortal Kombat, that kind of thing)
  • seemingly insignificant details that turn out to be super-important/significant
  • worldbuilding of pretty much any kind
  • ridiculous crossovers (or indeed sensible ones) - I'll read crossovers with anything I've written

For shipfic (in addition to the above):
  • friends to lovers; enemies to lovers; enemies to friends to lovers
  • characters who know each other really well (or get to know each other really well) and show it without meaning to or really trying to
  • people not saying 'I love you' but clearly meaning/demonstrating it anyway
  • tough characters making themselves realistically vulnerable
  • differences and contrasts in age/height/etc. (especially when the smaller/younger one isn't actually small/young, only in comparison to the other character)
  • one character being physically stronger than the other (especially if the weaker one isn't weak, only weaker in comparison)
  • happy (or at least hopeful) endings
  • getting together
  • first time (first time together, or getting back together after years apart)
  • competence kink
  • loyalty kink; trust kink
  • jealousy/possessiveness/co-dependency/protectiveness
  • admiration (physical and/or intellectual)
  • me-and-you-against-the-world
  • identity porn (roleplaying; undercover; secret identities)
  • characters wearing each other's clothes (fine either way for m/m or f/f, fine for the woman in m/f to wear the man's clothes, but I'd prefer no male crossdressing)
  • fake dating or undercover turning into something more
  • everyone thinks they're dating (but they're not, except maybe then they are)
  • dating but they don't realise (or one of them doesn't but the other does, for cultural/obliviousness reasons)

Explicit/kinky fic:
  • fight sex, or sparring/arguing turning into more
  • rough sex in general, and rough sex that turns slower and/or more intense from one time to the next
  • knifeplay, gunplay, weaponplay in general
  • breathplay/choking (preferably with hands)
  • bloodplay (preferably involving knives)
  • semi-clothed sex; clothed/naked; how awkward clothing (or armour, etc.) is removed
  • sex in showers
  • one character shaving a (male) character's face (preferably with a cutthroat razor but I'll adore anything!)
  • one character writing on another's skin; marking with cuts or bruises
  • stories behind scars/bruises/tattoos (and touching/kissing them, or reopening/reinjuring them)
  • differences in age/height/strength
  • sexual fantasies
  • voice/accent kink; phone sex; sexual situations where one character can only hear the other one (e.g. in total darkness)
  • switching - I have absolutely no strict top/bottom roles in mind (and switching mid-scene is also great)
  • for m/m, first time topping/bottoming/with a guy
  • desperation; characters knowing they shouldn't but not being able to help themselves
  • characters who think they're just having casual sex ending up unexpectedly desperately in love
  • hard, desperate kissing; fingers in hair

Darker fic:
I enjoy darkfic and dark art so as long as it's not in my DNWs, go for it. Torture porn, ghost stories, scary magic, religious weirdness, twisted mindfuckery, non-con, gaslighting, serious body horror, all absolutely A-OK. Feel free to use bad/offensive/dirty language if it fits the fic, as much swearing as you like, etc. I'll read just about anything, including xeno, vore, serial killer AUs, whatever tickles your fancy. Basically: excepting my DNWs, feel free to try to weird me out!

For this exchange: consider this my blanket permission to change anyone/everyone's gender and/or sexuality if you like, or keep them the same, or go with trans or nonbinary characters or whatever else takes your fancy - it's all 100% fine just as long as the fic doesn't veer into issuefic, anything concentrating on dysphoria (unless you're actually aiming for body horror!), or lengthy discussions of the whys and wherefores in 21st century terms.

Prompts below are just in case you're interested in questions that crop up for me when I read these things - please don't feel tied into them if you've got other ideas!

La Barbe bleue | Bluebeard - Charles Perrault:

I read this one in French before I read it in English (and I love it in both, to be fair!). If you've any inclination to borrow anything from the French, feel free; if not, that's totally not meant as a weird and unreasonable demand, just a note!

I also love the illustrations Gustave Doré did for this story (they're on Wikipedia here under "Galerie"), so if you fancied borrowing imagery from those (I love how monstrous Bluebeard looks, his wife's dainty little hands and the great big keys, her lovely ornate dress, and her brother's outfits - they're very Three Musketeers!), totally fine by me. :D

100% happy to see horror or ghost stories or smut or whatever you like!

--- Requested Character(s): La Barbe bleue | Bluebeard

- Why leave a key to a room he's told his wife not to open? Is it just that he expects her to obey him? Is it some kind of test? Does he expect her to open it (and is some sort of creepy killer who's just looking for an excuse)?
- Why the blue beard, anyway? Curse? Dye? Some other reason?
- What's with the magic key? Did he make it? Did he have it made?
- Is there anything else that's magical about the house?
- ...and, if he's magical himself, did jabbing him with swords really kill him? Might he just set up again somewhere else?

--- Requested Character(s): Bluebeard's Wife

- Did she ever find a use for the magic key herself?
- Is there anything else she finds out is magic about the house and estate? - What about the other houses, considering Bluebeard has "fine houses, both in town and country"?
- She gets married again in the story, and her new husband makes her forget everything that happened. Is that true? Does she remember sometimes? Is it maybe that her new husband is another creepy magicky person who makes her forget?
- Is there any way to retell the story so she saves herself rather than hoping her brothers get there in time?

--- Requested Character(s): Bluebeard's Past Wives

- Did they all die for the same reason? Did they all die the same way?
- What about the first one? What was the story there, considering there weren't any past wives before her for her to find in the room!
- How many of them are there, really? If Bluebeard's some kind of magical creature, that could mean he's had a ludicrously long life - horrifically, there could be a lot of them.
- Are they completely gone or have they haunted Bluebeard, or have they maybe talked amongst themselves, or appeared to any of the other wives before they died?

Fyrtøiet | The Tinderbox - Hans Christan Andersen:

I had a copy of the Ladybird version of The Tinderbox when I was young and pictures of the dogs terrified me. I'm totally open to being terrified, repulsed, weirded out, or indeed absolutely the opposite!

I'd definitely prefer that if you use the dogs, though, they're still sort of uncanny and not just pet dogs.

100% happy to read about any combination of the characters below - get the princess and the witch together, something about the dogs and the witch, and dogs and the princess and the witch, etc.!

--- Requested Character: Soldaten | The Soldier

- The soldier in this story doesn't seem to care about anyone but himself - does he ever get his comeuppance? (Or feel free to make him a better person if you like!)
- What's he doing wandering the countryside? Is he a deserter? Is he on authorised leave? Is he coming home from a war? Is he an enemy soldier?
- What did he spend all that money on before he realised what the tinderbox did?
- Is he any good as a king? Are people scared of him or is he fair, or something in between?
- What else might he have the dogs do for him?

--- Requested Character: Prindsessen | The Princess

- How does she feel about being locked up in the copper castle? Was she ever told why? Does she resent her father? What does her mother have to do with it? What did she do with her time? Did she ever sneak out? Did she ever have another lover?
- Does she actually like the soldier or is she just pleased to not be locked up in the castle anymore? What sort of adventures might she have?
- What does she think of the dogs?
- Does she ever use the tinderbox? What would she want if she did? Would she travel?
- Anything about what the princess is like! Is she nice? Is she intelligent? Does she have no idea about the outside world?
- What would have happened to her if the soldier hadn't come along? Would she have managed to get out by herself? Would there have been a different soldier?

--- Requested Character: Hundene | The Dogs

- What on earth are the dogs doing in the hall under the tree? Who put them there? Is that just where they live?
- Where did they come from? Were they created or are they cursed or are they just some sort of weird breed of Magic Dog?
- Have they ever had another master? Who was it? What did they do for him/her?
- Whose money are they guarding? What might happen if that person (or magical creature!) found that the dogs and the money were gone?
- Do the dogs, being oddly magical creatures, have any sort of sentience? Are they maybe dogs that can think and/or speak (maybe just to each other)? What might they think of the situation?
- What exactly is the deal with putting the dogs on the witch's apron?

--- Requested Character:Hexen | The Witch

- What does she want the tinderbox for, exactly?
- Did her grandmother really leave the box down there? If so, why? If not, who did?
- Is she really dead? Being witchy, perhaps she comes back and makes a play for the box. Perhaps she was testing the soldier all along?
- Anything about the witch's backstory: who is she? Where is she from? What sort of witchy things might she have got up to? Is she the same witch as we see in any other fairytale?

The Lady of Shalott - Alfred Lord Tennyson:

Man, I remember reading this in English class at secondary school when I was about 13, and I loved it. Apparently, I still do now!

Feel free to pull in other bits of Arthuriana (or Greek/Roman myth, or fairytales) if you like, reference other Lady-of-Shalott-related works (such as the Waterhouse painting, Tennyson's Lancelot and Elaine, etc.), have her be Elaine of Astolat or make something up as her backstory, or take it in a totally different direction. Creepy and weird is good! Tragic or indeed somehow ending happily is good! Smut is good! (It's pretty much all good, to be fair.)

I'd really, really prefer no comparisons between weaving and webs and spiders here, though - I understand there's scope for an Arachne thing, but I'm sorry to say that will make me nope out at the speed of light. :( Moirai/Fates-related stuff totally fine, though!

--- Requested Character(s): Lancelot

- Where's he coming from? Why's he going to Camelot?
- If they met before, does he recognise her when he sees her in the boat or was she just one of a long line of Girls He Met?
- Does he ever think about her afterwards? Maybe he dreams about her. Maybe she haunts him. Or maybe switch the two of them around and he's the one cursed and stuck in a tower.
- If he'd known about the lady in the tower with the curse, would he have tried to save her from it?
- Does he ever try to figure out who she was and what happened (in a kind of weird Arthurian detective way, or not!)?

--- Requested Character(s): The Lady of Shalott

- What's the nature of the curse? Who cursed her? Is it just her that's cursed?
- Is there anyone else living in the castle (and are they cursed, free to come and go, already killed by the curse)? Is she completely alone?
- Was it a conscious choice to go to the window (was she just sick (literally to death!) of not seeing anything of the outdoors but in a mirror?
- Is there anything else that magicky about where she is, the weaving, the mirror?
- Is all she sees in it reflections through the window or can she see into other places, maybe?
- Does she only weave what she can see in the mirror or does she ever deviate?
- Why Lancelot? Had they met before (in the style of Elaine of Astolat or otherwise)? Had he broken his journey there at some point?
- Maybe AU where he actually does stop at Shalott - what would they have made of each other if they'd actually spoken to each other?
- How might she have broken the curse if she hadn't triggered it?

Medusa (Metamorphoses - Ovid):

Ooookay, so, blanket permission for you to choose whichever version of this you like, from Ovid to Cixous to Freud to Clash of the Titans or that series of photos of Rihanna by Damien Hirst. Make her monstrous or cursed or beautiful or whatever you like.

Basically: I wrote a huge chunk of my undergrad dissertation on presentations and interpretations of Medusa, so feel free to go for whatever you like - I've probably read/seen it! And my Latin isn't terrible so if you wanted to drag some of that in, that's 100% fine.

Any combination of the characters below is great, btw, or on their own! And please feel totally free to use either their Greek or Roman names - happy with them being Minerva and Neptune or Athena and Poseidon (and for any culture-specific baggage to change too, if you feel inclined!).

If you've got any inclination to write Medusa/Neptune or Medusa/Minerva (or Medusa/Perseus if you fancy it!), I'd be up for that.

--- Requested Character(s): Medusa

- We've got a few different Medusa origin stories - beautiful maiden, always-a-monster, somewhere between the two... Which is true?
- What does she do with her time? Surely she's not just lurking about waiting to kill people.
- Has anyone ever come to find her who didn't want to kill her?
- What's her relationship to the other gorgons?

--- Requested Character(s): Minerva

- What sort of relationship did Minerva have with Medusa prior to cursing her (if you go with that version)?
- Did she have an ulterior motive for helping Perseus kill Medusa?
- Does she ever visit Medusa?
- What actually soured their relationship?

--- Requested Character(s): Neptune

- Did Neptune ever actually know Medusa?
- If they did meet: was it actually rape? Was it a relationship of some sort? Did Minerva overreact?
- Pegasus and Chrysaor: does he consider them his children?
- What sort of reaction might he have had to Medusa's transformation?
- Does he ever visit her?

Rotkäppchen | Little Red Riding Hood - Brothers Grimm:

Okay, first off, I should probably say that I'm okay with whatever version of Red Riding Hood you want to write. If you want to stick strictly with the Grimm version - great! If you want to go for Perrault - equally great! Literally any other version that takes your fancy - go for it!

Secondly: Red Riding Hood. Yep, she's a child in the story and my first DNW up there ^ is children - this has not escaped my notice! I'm totally happy to make an exception for this fandom, as long as it's not entirely about the fact that Red is a child, as in her being a child is not a central plot point (e.g. "only children can do X!" or "because she was a child, she didn't think about Y"). Also totally happy with aged-up Red Riding Hood, anywhere from her canon-like age up to Red as a grandmother with her own granddaughter wandering in the woods. (Pregnancy, though, is still very much a DNW.)

Totally fine with gen or shippy here - anthropomorphise the wolf if you like, have Red (at least 16, please!) get it on with the huntsman (huntswoman?), huntsman/wolf, maybe Red meets someone else who's been plagued by wolves or joins forces with the wolf for some reason...and feel totally free to give everyone names, or not!

--- Requested Character(s): Little Red Riding Hood

- Does she ever stray off the path again, despite her best intentions?
- If, somehow, the wolf managed to get away (heck, he managed to survive being sliced open!), might they ever meet again? How would that go?
- What does she decide to do with herself afterwards? Red Riding Hood, wolf-hunter? Hunter of magical creatures? Princess? Witch? Storyteller?
- Does she get into any other trouble, with any other (magical) creatures? Witches? Vampires?

--- Requested Character(s): Big Bad Wolf

- Okay, what's with the talking that somehow survives being chopped open and manages to swallow two people whole? (If you want to go for a sort of 10th Kingdom wolf-but-more-wolfy-at-the-full-moon kind of character, or a werewolf, or some sort of selkie-like human-in-a-wolf-suit, or somehow it's a magic talking actual wolf, totally fine!)
- Did he ever manage to successfully trick anyone else? Why trick people anyway, why not just eat them?
- Does the wolf actually live in the woods? Is he from somewhere else? Does he have siblings, parents, anyone who'd want to avenge his death? Is he a serial trickster and eater of people? Seriously, eating rabbits or something would be a lot simpler!
- Why is the huntsman looking for him, anyway?
